Points Blog Seeks Contributing Editors

Points, the joint blog of AIHP and the Alcohol and Drugs History Society (ADHS), is accepting applications for five new Contributing Editors to join the editorial team. Interested AIHP members are encouraged to apply.

Points brings together scholars and thinkers with wide-ranging expertise to produce original reflections about the history of drugs, medicines, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, and their allied fields. The blog publishes new posts twice weekly.

Contributing Editors are required to conceptualize and author eight blog posts per year, between 750-1500 words, on matters regarding drug, pharmaceutical, or alcohol history and/or their contemporary cultures. Each Contributing Editor receives an annual honorarium of $500.00.

Points seeks to expand the diversity of content published on the blog. Applications are encouraged from individuals who are able to write informed posts addressing pharmaceutical, drug or alcohol histories/cultures, particularly those with backgrounds in one or more of the following geographical regions:

  • Africa
  • The Americas (including Native American/Native Indian medicine, drug, or alcohol cultures)
  • Australasia
  • East Asia
  • South Asia
  • Europe (including UK or Ireland)
  • Middle East

It is understood that there is a diversity of drug, pharmaceutical, and alcohol histories and cultures within these broad geographical regions, and applicants need not have expertise encompassing an entire region. These categories have been selected in order to best complement the existing skill-sets and knowledge-base of Points editors and regular contributors.

Please apply by sending an email to Points Co-Managing Editors Claire Davey (c.davey615@canterbury.ac.uk) and Mary Magnuson (mmagnuson3@wisc.edu) with the following content:

  1. A short biography of your expertise and the geographical region you would like to be responsible for writing about.
  2. An example of your writing, 1500 words max (the writing sample need not have been published).

Contributing Editors do not have to be academics but must evidence the ability to write informed pieces based upon expertise in the field of drugs, pharmaceuticals, medicines and alcohol, and be willing to work with the Managing Editors on any required edits or suggestions. Applications from postgraduate students are also welcome.

The deadline for applications is 31st December 2022. Selections and feedback will be completed by 31st January, 2023.
