New Appointments to AIHP’s Board of Directors

AIHP’s Board of Directors took action in December to fill several Board vacancies.

Cynthia J. Boyle

A current director, Cynthia J. Boyle, PharmD, was elected to the position of Vice President. John Grabenstein left that position in November when he was installed as AIHP’s President. Dr. Boyle, a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, joined AIHP’s Board in 2020 as an appointed director. She has been an Institute member since 2003. She will serve the one year remaining on her predecessor’s three-year term.

The Board elected longtime AIHP member Sandra M. Fábregas Troche, PhD, RPh, to fill the director position vacated by Dr. Boyle. Dr. Fábregas served on the faculty of the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy for many years and is currently the Executive Director of Centro Latino de Bioética y Humanidades (Latino Center for Bioethics and the Humanities), based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Sandra M. Fabregas Troche

An expert on the history of pharmacy in Puerto Rico, Dr. Fábregas is the author of the book La Institucionalización de la Farmacia en Puerto Rico (The Institutionalization of Pharmacy in Puerto Rico) and was the project director of the first documentary film of the history of pharmacy in Puerto Rico in 1992. She is a founding member of the Puerto Rican Society of Pharmacy History. She received an AIHP Sonnedecker Visiting Scholar fellowship in 2006. Dr. Fábregas, an AIHP member since 1997, was elected to a three-year term.

Also elected to a three-year term was Nancy Alvarez, PharmD, BCPC, FAPhA, CPCC, who is filling the appointed director position previously held by Melissa Murer Corrigan, whose term expired. Dr Alvarez is the Associate Dean for Academic and Professional Affairs at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy at The University of Arizona, where she oversees all aspects of the Phoenix branch location. She is also an Associate Professor of Practice for the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in 1992.

Nancy Alvarez

Dr. Alvarez served as the President of the American Pharmacists Association in 2017-2018. She has served as president for the Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society and vice president for collegiate affairs for the Phi Delta Chi Professional Fraternity. She participates in leader development for the Pharmacy Leadership and Education Institute as a facilitator, content developer and program director.

The Institute’s Nominations Committee (comprised of AIHP President John Grabenstein and Directors Catherine Taglieri and Arthur Daemmrich ) selected the nominees to fill the vacancies. The terms of three directors will expire at the end of 2022. Institute members interested in serving on the Board should email Executive Director Dennis Birke at dennis.birke@aihp.org.

AIHP COVID-19 ProjectThe American Institute of the History of Pharmacy is documenting and preserving pharmacy stories and experiences during the COVID-19 global pandemic for the benefit of future historians and scholars. We seek to record the effects of this public health emergency on all types of pharmacy experiences. We invite you to share your pharmacy stories, photos, videos, artifacts, and other documentation of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.


You can participate in the AIHP COVID-19 Pandemic Pharmacy Historical Documentation Project either (1) by immediately sharing your thoughts/experiences and/or submitting digital materials or (2) by signifying your to intention to submit materials in the future. Please comply with all applicable local or state stay-at-home orders while self-documenting.
