Three AIHP members received major distinguished service awards at the recent Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Albert I. Wertheimer, PhD., MBA., received the ASHP Board of Directors Donald E. Francke Medal, which honors pharmacists who have made significant international contributions to advance pharmacy practice. Dr. Wertheimer, an AIHP member since 1989, is a Professor at the Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy, which has been a loyal annual contributor to AIHP’s Pharmacy Education Fund since 2002.

Dr. Wertheimer’s work, which combines outcomes research and pharmacoeconomics, has helped patients around the world obtain safe and affordable medications and has contributed to reduced national health expenditures. He served for four terms as President of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Academic Section, two terms as a FIP Vice President and Council member, and two terms as Chair of the FIP Social and Administrative Section.

John E. Clark, Pharm.D., FASHP, received the ASHP-ABHP (Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists) Joint Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in efforts to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare.

Dr. Clark is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapeutics and Clinical Research and Director of Experiential Education and Pharmacy Residency Programs at the University of South Florida (USF) College of Pharmacy in Tampa, Fla.  He is a vocal advocate for the creation of culturally competent systems of care to address racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. For more than 20 years, he organized a series of educational programs that explored health literacy, medication adherence, use of health information technology, and medication management of conditions such as diabetes, renal disease, prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS.

David F. Chen, Senior Director of ASHP’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders, received the 2019 CEO Award for Staff Excellence. The award acknowledges ASHP staff members who perform their job duties with distinction and demonstrate exceptional initiative in contributing to the organization.

Mr. Chen, who joined ASHP’s staff in 2004, was cited for his leadership role in shepherding critical strategic initiatives within ASHP. He was a key figure in the successful implementation of ASHP’s newest section, the Section of Specialty Pharmacy Practitioners that launched last year.

AIHP applauds the exceptional work of these members! AIHP was represented at the Midyear Clinical Meeting by past president William Zellmer. ASHP is one of AIHP’s National Association Sponsors.
