AIHP Accepting Nominations for Certificates of Commendation

Each year AIHP awards Certificates of Commendation to recognize individuals or organizations whose work or actions have contributed to or promoted the history of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals. The Institute is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Certificates of Commendation. Nominations will be accepted through August 1, 2022. The nomination form is available on AIHP’s website.

AIHP awards Certificates of Commendation to recognize activities or historical endeavors by individuals or organizations that (i) advance knowledge or understanding of the history of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals; or (ii) utilize the history of pharmacy and pharmaceuticals to entertain, inform, or educate or to address or advance understanding of contemporary issues.

Certificates of Commendation are not intended to recognize individuals for academic achievements or for peer-reviewed publications.

AIHP has awarded Certificates of Commendation to recognize a wide range of activities and projects. In 2021, for example, certificate recipients included:

  • John Schreiner, for his decades of work to collect, preserve, and make available to the public a treasure trove of artifacts, objects, and materials important to the history of pharmacy at the History of Pharmacy Research Center, a pharmacy museum in Griffith, Indiana, which he founded and operates.
  • Robin R. Kipps, for her almost 40 years of work as the lead interpreter at the Pasteur & Galt Apothecary in Colonial Williamsburg, in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she uses her skills as an interpreter to offer thousands of visitors a glimpse of the role and work of apothecaries in 18th century colonial America.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, for its “Pharmacy Heritage Trail,” a permanent exhibition at the School designed to introduce current and prospective students to the profession’s history. The exhibit’s components include videos on aspects of pharmacy history from ancient times to today, a timeline featuring the history of the VCU School of Pharmacy and the history of pharmacy in Virginia, and a series of informational panels depicting facets of pharmacy history in Virginia.

Completed nominations forms should be emailed to AIHP at aihp@aihp.org or mailed to the Institute’s office. AIHP expects to announce the 2022 recipients of Certificates of Commendation is early September.

Further information about AIHP’s Certificates of Commendation program is available on the Institute’s website.
