The American Institute of the History of Pharmacy is proud to announce that the 2025 Robert P. Fischelis Award has been conferred upon Bill Zellmer, BSPharm, MPH, DSc(hon), DHL(hon), FFIP, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of pharmacy history and enduring support of the Institute.
Established in memory of Robert P. Fischelis (1891–1981)—a visionary leader in pharmacy and a generous benefactor of AIHP—the award is conferred by the AIHP Board of Directors based on nominations from Institute members. It recognizes individuals or organizations whose work has significantly advanced both the historical understanding of pharmacy and the mission of the Institute.
According to the letter of citation sent to him, the Board of Directors selected Bill for this prestigious honor in acknowledgment of his “profound and enduring impact on the field of pharmacy history.” His deeply researched and eloquent tribute to Joseph A. Oddis, the first Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP) not only honored a legendary figure in health-system pharmacy but also illuminated the transformative evolution of the profession in the 20th century.
Bill’s writing has given the profession a richer understanding of its own journey. As Editor-in-Chief of AJHP, Bill helped shape the historical narrative of pharmacy with clarity, insight, and scholarly rigor while keeping a clear-eyed commitment to preserving the lessons of the past.
Beyond his written contributions, Bill has been a tireless advocate for the field. As a long-serving member and former President of AIHP, he has inspired future leaders to engage with pharmacy’s past as a source of insight and innovation. His creation of a pharmacy history course for American Society of Health-System Pharmacists executive fellows has ensured that emerging leaders in the field are grounded in the legacy they inherit.
Additionally, Bill has been a tireless ambassador for the discipline—encouraging colleagues to share their historical perspectives, fostering international dialogue, and championing excellence in pharmacy literature. One of his most impactful recent iniatives is the U.S. Public Health Service Chief Pharmacist Officers Oral History Project, conducted in partnership with Richard Church and Richard Bertin, which captures the personal journeys, professional challenges, and transformative contributions of CPOs in shaping modern pharmacy practice. This project stands as a testament to his commitment to preserving the voices and stories that define the profession.
Through decades of scholarship, leadership, and mentorship, Bill has helped ensure that the history of pharmacy remains a vibrant and essential part of the profession’s identity. AIHP is proud to recognize Bill’s extraordinary legacy with the 2025 Robert P. Fischelis Award.
