With the launch of the five-year capital campaign in 2024, the AIHP will build a significantly larger foundation for the future.
Whether documents, artifacts, or oral histories, the AIHP is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of pharmacy. Preservation and collection, as well as outreach, are fundamental to AIHP. This helps ensure that the advancements and challenges of the past are not forgotten and can inform future progress. The AIHP serves as a unique collector and publisher of pharmacy information. AIHP holds a world-leading historical archive and has digitzed rare items. It provides historical context that can enhance the understanding of modern pharmacy and pharmaceutical advancements for students, researchers, and professionals. By documenting and sharing the history of pharmacy through media and public programming, the AIHP increases awareness of the profession’s contributions to healthcare. Such efforts, using multiple media platforms and tools, will inspire more trust and respect for pharmacists in the community. AIHP has always been dedicated to research and knowledge generation that is useful. Historical insights, from graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and pharmacist historians, can drive current and future innovations in pharmacy and allied health fields. Understanding past successes and failures helps shape more effective and safer medication practices.
“In an era of change for both pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry, this campaign represents renewal and growth to better collect and tell the histories about pharmacy and healthcare that matter.”
To ensure this bright future, the AIHP is seeking gifts in the following priority areas:
AIHP’s KEY PRIORITIES, 2025-2029
Preserving & Expanding Collections
Contributions would facilitate the use of a dedicated state-of-the-art space to house and preserve the AIHP’s rare books, library, archives, and artifacts, and to host researchers to use these materials comfortably. Contributions here will support our facilities and digital archive, and in turn enable the best stewardship of our collections as possible.
Documenting Pharmacy Practice
All companies and all national pharmacy organizations have a story. Pharmacy practice and the pharmaceutical industry have evolved in multiple directions that have yet to be documented fully. The historical record is not static and we must continuously add to our resources or AIHP will not be able to foster new pharmacy pharmaceuticals history.
Communications in a Digital Age
AIHP needs to build a digital infrastructure and digital content systems. AIHP needs to create a “media lab” to do history in new formats for the next generation – to communicate stories to wider public audiences. The AIHP, as an 80+ year old organization, hopes to modernize its digital and communication operations.
Special Programs & Initiatives
AIHP funds programs that engage the public and specific groups in pharmacy history – and also enables students and staff to focus on specific topic areas. Additional resources for these progrms or the creation of new funds for initiatives would enhance the AIHP’s existing awards and fellowships program and thus encourage the next generation of researchers
