The Madison Drug History Workshop, scheduled for October 3-4, 2024, at UW-Madison’s School of Pharmacy, focuses on critical discussions of chemicals, intoxicants, and medicines.
The workshop addresses the intersections of medicine, intoxicants, and policy, particularly regarding substances like cannabis, psychedelics, and opioids. Topics of discussion include the reclassification and regulation of cannabis and psychedelics, as well as intellectual property and pharmacovigilance. The workshop’s participants will also address the history of the pharmaceutical industry and the implications of opiates and opioids on addiction and rehabilitation policies.
The two-day event includes a series of panels covering emerging research projects, psychoactive communications, and outreach efforts. Scholars at different stages of their careers will present their work on a range of topics such as the transformation of traditional Chinese medicine, the history of psychedelics, and the global drug trade. Participants include experts from a wide range of institutions like UW-Madison, the University of Buffalo, the University of Saskatchewan, and more.
The workshop continues UW-Madison’s tradition of fostering collaboration between historians of drugs and pharmacy and other disciplines, connecting research with policy considerations.
The event is led by Lucas Richert’s Urdang Lab, with additional support from the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, and the Alcohol and Drugs History Society.
