AIHP Launches Digital Collections!

The American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy, is thrilled to announce the launch of our new digital library, The Digital Collections of the Edward Kremers Research Library and Archive! The digital collections include a wide range of print materials, manuscripts, and artifacts from the jointly-held collections of AIHP and the School of Pharmacy. Items were selected for their uniqueness and historical importance, reflecting the long and diverse history of community pharmacy and pharmaceutical manufacturing in the United States. The collections can be accessed by researchers all over the world, bringing them to new and wider audiences.

A highlight of the digitized collections is the Lila and Emanuel Halpern Pharmacy Collection, featuring selections of items recently donated to the Edward Kremers Research Library and Archive (EKRLA) by Lila Halpern. Lila’s collection focuses on pharmaceutical advertising in the twentieth century. Some highlights include a series of booklets on hormone therapy by Reed & Carnrick and a collection of Caroid ink blotters, all of which feature incredible typography. A veritable feast for historical researchers and design enthusiasts alike!

And the best part is, this is just the beginning! The collections are going to continue to grow as more items are digitized and ingested. Keep checking back over the next few months for more treasures from the collections. We will also be posting favorite items to our social media—be sure to follow us on Facebook (American Institute of the History of Pharmacy) and Instagram (@PharmacyHistory).

Today’s announcement coincides with the eighty-fourth anniversary of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. Even as we look back on the historical record, we are excited to be taking this step into the future.
